Flash
ignition!
In
an instant there is a large, open flame. The volatiles liberated from
the wood ignite at roughly 1100 F.
Open,
sustaining flame occurred less than 10 minutes after the sun was in a
clear patch of sky!

Massachusetts
Institute of Technology, Archimedes Death Ray: Idea Feasibility Testing
October, 2005.
Eureka!
M.I.T.
Massachusetts Institute of
Technology realized the importance of the right materials for the right
job.
Unlike the
illustration of Archimedes aiming a special round mirror it's more
likely that
Archimedes
defeated a fleet of ships by using the polished metal shields of troups
- far more practical and available - to focus
the sun at a point on a ship, at which time it burst into flames.
